Open/Close Detection
Low-Cost Datalogging
Switch-based open/close detection for containers and packaging. Automatically timestamps when packaging is opened or closed, providing tamper evidence and handling documentation alongside temperature data for complete shipment condition records.
Tamper Evidence via Open/Close Log
Temperature data alone cannot prove whether a shipment was opened, repacked, or interfered with during transit — a fact that becomes critical when a recipient disputes product integrity or when an excursion needs to be attributed to a specific handling event. This offering adds a tamper-evidence layer to the temperature record by logging every lid or door opening event with a precise timestamp.
How it's deployed
A reed switch mounted in the container closure detects magnetic field change the instant packaging is opened or resealed, and the event is written to the logger's memory alongside the concurrent temperature reading with millisecond-level timestamp resolution. Open/close events are displayed as vertical markers on the temperature graph in the downloaded report, making the relationship between handling events and temperature changes immediately visible.
Evidence & Reporting
The combined temperature-plus-event report documents every opening incident with its exact timestamp, duration the package remained open, and the temperature at the moment of opening and resealing — creating a handling audit trail that satisfies GDP requirements for shipment condition documentation and supports pharmaceutical quality investigations under GMP deviation procedures. Each report is digitally signed and timestamped at the point of download to confirm the log has not been altered post-transit.

Frequently Asked Questions
The reed switch requires a minimum separation distance between the magnet and sensor to trigger an event, so normal flexing, impact, or vibration during road or air transport does not generate false positives. The detection threshold is factory-calibrated for each container closure type to ensure that only genuine lid openings — not handling shock — are recorded.
Both streams are written to the same tamper-evident memory on the logger and share a single audit hash, so the open/close events cannot be deleted or modified without invalidating the entire dataset signature. Any attempt to selectively edit the event log is detectable in the compliance report.
Customs inspection events are recorded as timestamped open/close entries just like any other opening, which means the shipper has documentation confirming exactly when and for how long the container was open at a border point and what temperature it was exposed to during inspection. This record can be attached to the customs clearance file to pre-empt any quality dispute.
